5 Ways to Support Your Child’s Airway and Overall Development
As a functional pediatric dentist and a mom of three, I want to share five practical ways you can support your child’s airway and overall development.
1. Prioritize Nasal Breathing
The nose is designed for breathing, while the mouth is designed for speaking and eating. It is vital to ensure your child is breathing through their nose both during the day and at night. Chronic mouth breathing can lead to a narrow palate and dental crowding because it changes how the muscles of the face and jaw develop. If you notice your child’s mouth hanging open frequently, it is a sign that the airway may be compromised.
2. Observe Your Child Sleeping
Many parents believe that a child who "sleeps like a log" or tosses and turns is just a heavy sleeper. However, healthy sleep should be silent and still. If you observe your child snoring, gasping, or moving restlessly, it is often a sign that their body is struggling to maintain a clear airway. Spending ten minutes watching them sleep can provide more information than many dental X-rays can.
3. Encourage Proper Tongue Posture
The tongue is the body's natural orthodontic expander. For the jaw to grow wide enough to fit all the permanent teeth, the tongue must rest on the roof of the mouth. When the tongue rests on the floor of the mouth, the upper jaw often develops a narrow, high-arched shape. This shape further restricts the nasal passage and can lead to long-term breathing issues. Habits such as prolonged thumbsucking and pacifier use encourage low tongue posture.
4. Focus on Jaw Strength and Chewing
Diet plays a significant role in how the face and airway develop. I recommend starting baby-led weaning around 6 months to encourage the natural mechanics of chewing. As your child grows, continue to provide crunchy, fibrous foods. Modern diets are often too soft, which prevents the jaw muscles from strengthening and the bones from reaching their full growth potential. We encourage hard, crunchy foods like meat, carrots, apples, celery, bell peppers, nuts, cheese, etc.
5. Trust Your Mama Instincts
My biggest tip is to trust your instincts. You know your child better than anyone else. If you feel like something is off with their sleep, their mood, or their breathing, do not settle for being told they will grow out of it. You are your child's best advocate, and seeking a root-cause approach is the best way to support their lifelong health.
